Wanda Fay Volker 1932-2019


STAFFORD — Wanda Fay Volker, 87, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019 at Hospice and Homecare of Reno County. 

The daughter of Walter Edgar and Elsie May (Ricketts) Dunn was born Jan. 19, 1932 on her parent’s rural farmstead southeast of Stafford. 

After graduating in 1950 from Stafford High School, she worked as a receptionist for Dr. C. Everett Brown. 

On Oct. 14, 1951 she married M. Roger Volker at the Antioch Friends Church in rural Stafford. Roger preceded her in death on May 21, 2018. They were married for 66 years. 

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and constant caregiver to many, especially her grandchildren. Over the years she worked at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a switchboard operator, Fields Variety Store and was an Avon sales representative for many years. Later, she worked as the office manager/secretary/bookkeeper at Basye Well Service in Stafford for 26 years until she retired the first time. 

She became a paraprofessional at Stafford Elementary USD 349, where she worked for several years until retiring a second and final time. 

She was a member of the Zenith United Presbyterian Community Church where she taught children’s Sunday school, was always active in Bible school, a member of the church choir and Mamie Volker Missionary Society as well as serving on numerous different church committees. She also served as the church janitor for many years. She loved her family, her church, her community and had a special love for babies and children. 

She also loved cooking, sewing, flowers and gardening. She was good at all, but was an exceptionally good cook. She was a member of the local EHU Modern Homemakers Club, Basye Well Service bowling team. She and Roger belonged to a card club made from a very energetic and fun group of close friends.

Survivors include children, Sharon Ochs (Kent Adams), Renee Salem (David), Gary Volker (Anita), brother Ralph Dunn, sister Bonnie Scoggins (Wayne), and sister-in-law Joan Dunn; six grandchildren — Eric Ochs, Heather Burns (Andrew Mortimer), Jenna Zeman (Cody), Cierrah Bryant, Nash Volker (Malorie), Kayne Volker (Haley) and 16 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Roger, grandson Samuel B. Salem, daughter-in-law Cindy K. Volker, and brother Roy Dunn.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019 at Minnis Chapel, Stafford with Pastor John Van Bruggen presiding. Burial will be at Stafford Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 1-7 p.m. with family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. at Minnis Chapel, Stafford.
