The age of insanity

To the editor:

There was a period of several hundred years in European history called “The Dark Ages.” This was a time of almost continuous war, famine, plagues, human depravity, barbarianism and suffering. These were terrible times and no doubt worse than anything we are experiencing today. Today, however, we are entering into what I think may be an equally or even more frightening time, which I call “The Age of Insanity.”

We, a supposably enlightened, informed society elected a mentally impaired 78-year-old man, very probably vulnerable to our powerful foreign enemies through questionable international business deals, to be President of the United States and expected positive outcomes. These outcomes have obviously not occurred, in fact quite the opposite has.

I recently read a quote attributed to Kamala Harris. If this quote is an accurate portrayal of what she said, it is the only thing I have ever heard her say that I agree with. Apparently, she said, “Elections are a lot like ordering and the American people got what they ordered when they elected Joe Biden.” Very true.

Biden did more damage in his first few days in office than most of our presidents have done in their full terms and I am afraid it is just the beginning. I could list many specific decisions that this administration has made, some of which are very hypocritical and others that are just plain crazy, but I think you all know what they are.

What could possibly be the mindset allowing such decisions to be made?

I think that Florida Senator Rick Scott’s 11-point proposal to rescue America helps to answer this question. At this point, it is not too important if one does or does not agree with the details of Senator Scott’s plan. The important part is that immediately after it was issued; he was severely censored by the GOP leadership of the Senate. Scott responded that there is an unwritten rule in Washington that one never talks to the American people about the frightening realities of such things as our national debt, the vulnerabilities of the Medicare or Medicaid programs or the general fragility of our federal government for fear of having careers and future credibility smeared and ruined. This rings true. We live in a society not ruled by reason, but by emotion, widespread corruption, greed, fear and hatred.

We have entered an Age of Insanity that I fear may make the Dark Ages look like a small bump in the road.
