To the editor:
I read the opinion page by Mr. Hogg yesterday (Sept. 12 Great Bend Tribune). I liked the article head where it said “No one should go hungry.” Truer words were never spoken and yet people still do! I use an exclamation point there because I notice the news likes to keep everything lukewarm for its most of its readers.
In a country like ours we should be able to say “No one should go hungry!” Emphatically. But it seems that what we get from our leaders who are supposed to be building us a strong and self sufficient society is, “Look, we have all these well-meaning people, so they’ll take care of it; ‘No one should go hungry.’”
Do you know what it means to provide for your own family’s needs without relying on a handout? Of course you do, it feels great! That is where America should be! Not at a Hobson’s choice. Which I’m sure many of your readers had to look up like I did. It’s no fun asking for handouts. Parents will do it though. This country should be better. Our politicians should be better! Our future generations should get better!
