To the editor,
The vibrant landscape of Kansas reflects the spirit of its people: strong, determined, and resilient. As the winds of change brush against our plains, Kansans are paying attention, more so now than ever before. Rep. Tracey Mann, Rep. Jake LaTurner, and Rep. Ron Estes, I join many in our state in casting a watchful eye on your upcoming votes for the next Speaker of the House. We expect our next Speaker to be a beacon of the values we hold dear.
Economic Integrity and Prudence:
• Single-Subject Spending: We need clarity, not complexity. Commit to single-subject spending bills that prioritize the interests of the people.
• Economic Stewardship: Inflationary spending and constant raising of the debt ceiling is a treacherous path. It’s time for sustainable, forward-thinking economic strategies.
• Economic Alarm Bells: A $2 trillion annual deficit and an overwhelming $33 trillion debt are not just numbers; they’re cries for reform. The patchwork approach of continuing resolutions and omnibus bills must end.
January 6th: Justice and Transparency:
• Justice Must Prevail: Concerns about the unjust detention of January 6th prisoners cannot be ignored. Due process is a right, not a privilege.
• Transparency is Non-Negotiable: The full January 6th videos must immediately be made available to the public. Our democracy thrives in the light, not shadows.
Restoring Faith in Governance:
• Accountability at the Helm: The President, like his predecessor and every citizen, must be held accountable. No position, no matter how high, should be immune to oversight.
• No More Backroom Deals: Kansans deserve transparency and inclusion. Secret agreements, irrespective of party lines, threaten our democratic foundation.
To Reps. Mann, LaTurner, and Estes, let this serve as both a plea and a reminder: Your actions, especially concerning the next Speaker, will resonate deeply with us. Stand with the Kansans who placed their trust in you.
