Dear Editor,
I was glad to read the article in the Great Bend Tribune: “The Bear essentials” (Oct. 3 issue). It is good news that the Brit Spaugh Zoo will be financially able to expand its bear exhibit, thanks in large part to a donation from the Dorothy Morrison Foundation providing that last pivotal dollar-amount needed to finalize the project.
I am pleased that work on the project will be undertaken during winter when the bears are safely asleep and in hibernation. As the article noted, it is an extensive project. Many people do not realize that this is no easy project. It requires fortified fencing, reinforced structures, improved shade and enhanced climbing-walls that are safe for bears as well as safe for zoo patrons to observe.
I am also glad that the bison-area will be restored with new fencing, as well as enhanced shelter and feed-stations. Zoos are great things. I am glad that the Brit Spaugh Zoo is coming closer to resembling an “Animal Sanctuary” with a lot of focus on “Animal Rights” and giving them as much natural habitat to roam, as they would “in the wild,” but safely held in prudent captivity. That is probably the best of both worlds. It cannot be achieved easily. I wish the Brit Spaugh Zoo the best of continued success ... not just for its operations, but also wishing the best for the animals and wildlife that it hosts.
