God judges nation based on character of leadership

Dear Editor,
I have been watching things in Washington for the last few years and was growing fearful. However, I am now encouraged. The reason is that the general population is beginning to see that character matters in our elected officials. This is good, because the Bible makes it abundantly clear that God judges a nation based on the character of its leadership.
As we read Kings and Chronicles, we can see how God views each leader. When we reach Manasseh, God is so offended by that kings actions, especially the killing of innocent lives both babies and adults (2 Kings 21:9, 16), that He gives that nation a final judgment. Then Josiah comes to the throne. He wholeheartedly follows the Lord and the rest of the nation follows him. He was not perfect and made a crucial mistake in his last days. However, as a result of his heart, God postpones that judgment until after Josiah dies.
George W. Bush made some mistakes in his presidency. However, we cannot disagree with his moral character. We experienced no sexual immorality in the Bush presidency, whether personally or in his enforcement of the laws of the land. President Obama apparently has had none of that in his marriage. However, in his enforcement of the moral laws of the land he has openly opposed God’s concept of morality.
George Bush promoted the family unit of one man and one woman for the moral raising of children. President Obama has worked hard to destroy the family unit, even refusing to defend DOMA while promoting homosexuality and granting federal funding for abortions.
George Bush moved quickly to defend the land and reassure Americans after 9/11, even leading us in prayer for our land. President Obama has openly supported our enemies, while refusing to participate in the National Day of Prayer.
George Bush worked to establish the security, as well as, the energy independence of America. It is agreed that he could have done more. However, President Obama has greatly weakened the military, opposed our boarder security (even suing a state that is trying to uphold it) and crippling our energy independence.
President John Adams had much to say about these things. “Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people...as [to] their great Creator, who does nothing in vain, has given them understandings, and a desire to know...the characters and conduct of their rulers.” (Dissertation on Canon and Feudal Law, 1765)
“The foundation of national morality must be laid in private families.... How is it possible that Children can have any just Sense of the sacred Obligations of Morality or Religion if, from their earliest Infancy, they learn their Mothers live in habitual Infidelity to their fathers, and their fathers in as constant Infidelity to their Mothers?” (Diary, June 2, 1776)
“National defense is one of the cardinal duties of a statesman.” (letter to James Lloyd, January, 1815)
The Bible also says: “Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but those who keep the law resist them. Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the Lord understand it fully.” (Proverbs 28:4-5)
“By justice a king gives a country stability, but one who is greedy for bribes tears it down...Mockers stir up a city, but wise men turn away anger. If a wise man goes to court with a fool, the fool rages and scoffs, and there is no peace.” (Proverbs 29:4, 8-9)
Let us take a close look at character of all our candidates as we vote in November. Our nation’s preservation is at stake.
