Dear Editor,
In the recent days, before and now after the presidential election, our country has been divided not only by political paties but also by an extreme, driven, ignorant, fear. The fear is of losing financial power and a fear of becoming equal in the eyes of the government, the beuacracy, and in the society. If Obama can keep up with his plans for healthcare and tax reform, then we the people of the United States will all be considered, One Nation, Under God, Indivisable, With Liberty, and Justice for All...
Or not...
Maybe, just maybe, we SHOULD do away with welfare in this country, all together, “The Welfare system in the United States began in the 1930s, during the Great Depression. After the Great Society legislation of the 1960s, people who were not elderly or disabled could receive need-based aid from the federal government.[15] Aid could include general welfare payments, healthcare through Medicaid, food stamps, and special payments for pregnant women and young mothers.” Welfare-Wikipedia the free encyclopedia. Are there people who abuse the system? Yes! Are there people who need to be off the system? Yes! Are there drug users? Are there smokers? Are there “cell phone” users on the system? Yes! and who work an everyday job too, there are all of the above!
If the people working within the system pay attention to the regulations governing the system, those people are weeded out.
Jesus has been quoted time and time again as saying, “There will always be poor”. Maybe the fault is not with the poor, and the welfare trapped people, maybe it is with a cold hearted society that wags their finger at them stating they will never amount to anything because they ARE poor...Maybe, just maybe society should start extending a hand to the poor, not in charity, but in jobs, guidance, discipline of mind. But most of all stop stereotyping and judging! Stop the ignorance too!
This is a society with the world of knowledge at their fingertips, literally, there is no reason for ignorance in today’s world..
I would not be so bold to say what Jesus would do. However, Christ was a worldly man who walked amonst the rich and poor...speaking the words of his father...I do believe there was a story about fish and teaching a man to fish...
