To the editor:
It is time to take stock of this community as it truly is. Great Bend is experiencing significant economic success. Just consider the investments being made in a new hotel, coffee shops, a bank, an Innovation Center, a childcare facility, the Zarah lofts, golf course and other capital investments underway. Also consider the fact the general population is also getting younger. The median age is 36.5, compared with 37.4 statewide and 38.9 nationally, and down from 38.9 in 2009. The average age is about 40, and median household income is $54,139, according to 2024 census data. Although challenges remain, there is much to celebrate. A renewed sense of confidence is taking hold as trends move in a positive direction. Having been deeply involved in Great Bend’s economic development for most of my adult life, I can honestly say, which I could not have said several years ago — this community is not merely surviving — it is thriving.
On Nov. 3, the voters of Great Bend shall have an opportunity to take another step towards strengthening the community’s economic prosperity. By voting yes on the sales tax initiative, we can shift part of the cost of new infrastructure and wastewater treatment facility upgrades to others, rather than placing the entire burden on the Great Bend taxpayers. We can also sustain the recent momentum of renewed growth by supporting the sales tax initiative and issuance of the Star Bonds. These bonds will enhance a much needed and improved spectator experience at the racetrack which will draw people far and wide. The Star Bonds will also enable the construction of new recreational facilities designed to attract visitors, youth and adult sports teams and their families. These visitors will shop, dine and stay in Great Bend and some after visiting might even decide to make this wonderful community their home.
Let’s seize the moment and Vote Yes on Nov. 3.
