The tenor of the coming year-long combat for the presidency has been seen already on the campaign trail, and Burt Cohen has shown himself to be a poster boy for the lack of taste that will be evident in a knock-down, drag-out that is going to get old real fast.
According to the Associated Press report on a recent campaign outing by Texas Gov. Rick Perry: “Democratic protesters waved signs and chanted ‘Go Back To Texas’ outside Popovers Bakery & Café on Thursday morning as the newcomer to the Republican presidential field tried to meet voters.
“It was the first stop on Perry’s third day in New Hampshire since the Texas governor launched his campaign Saturday.
“He ignored the protest and briefly walked through the coffee shop, shaking hands.
“The chanting and large media contingent following made for a chaotic atmosphere.”
Creating an atmosphere that shut down discussion was obviously the point for Cohen and his ilk.
Shutting down America’s chance to openly discuss how our nation will be led is also clearly the point of this “campaign.”
America is certainly at a crossroads and we are not going to be moved in a positive directly by shouting each other down, and for a change it would be refreshing if the American people refused to stand for the lack of character that has been so evident in recent campaigns.
The time has passed where we should be impressed by how discordant people can be, but we should be seeing how good their ideas are.
Martin Luther King Jr. discussed this point in time when he was arguing that what should be judged is the strength of a man’s character.
Well, you don’t prove your character, Mr. Cohen, by leading a mob to scream at a candidate so that he can’t be heard above your ill-mannered tantrum.
America needs more than that, from everyone involved in this national decision.
