The Barton Community College softball team went 1-2 during the weekend at the Region VI Championships in Wichita to end its season. Barton beat Colby to start the double-elimination tournament then fell to Butler and Garden City to ends its season with a 5-32 record. Barton won 4 of its final 9 games of the year.
Barton opened play on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Colby in a close contest that saw BCC score late then hold off the Lady Trojans.
The Lady Cougars lost to top-seeded Butler later in the day by a 7-0 score and then wrapped up their season with a 4-0 loss to Garden City on Sunday.
In the win over Colby, the two teams went into the bottom of the sixth still scoreless before Barton finally broke through for the lead. Anna Voss provided the big hit as she doubled in Alex Rodriguez and Tessa Sterling with one out to break the scoreless game.
The Lady Cougars had to hold off Colby in the final inning as the Trojans scored a run and had runners on first and third when Barton pitcher Karen Harris got a strike out to end the game.
Harris picked up the win, going all seven innings and allowing just four hits — three in the final inning.
Barton fell behind early to the eventual Region VI champion Butler as the Lady Grizzlies scored four times in the first inning.
From there BCC held Butler off the scoreboard and kept things interesting until the fifth inning when Butler plated three more runs for the 7-0 win.
In an elimination game on Sunday, Barton kept things very interesting with Garden City.
Garden scored single runs in each of the first two innings, but Barton kept it at 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth when Garden added two more runs for the 4-0 final.
