Most of the Jayhawk Conference season has been the big three, the middle two, and the rest of the field. The Barton men’s golf team was in that middle two group.
That was again the case at the Jayhawk Conference Championships played at Sand Creek Station in Newton Monday and Tuesday.
Hutchinson, Dodge City and Garden City were clearly the top three. In the season finale it was Dodge City that won the meet with Hutchinson second and Garden City third – all with three strokes of each other.
Barton finished in fifth, just missing out on fourth by a single stroke to Kansas City Kansas.
“We played pretty well and were consistent for the most part,” Barton Coach Doug Kaiser said. “We just didn’t have that low round like we needed to.”
The final season standings gave Hutchinson the top spot with 25.5 points followed by Dodge with 25. Garden was third with 23.
The Cougars finished fourth in the standings with 16 points – edging KCK, which finished with 15.5.
Dodge City came from eight strokes back after 18 holes of the 54-hole event. The Conquistadors passed Hutchinson and Garden on the final day for the win with 876 strokes. Hutchinson was second at 878 and Garden third at 879.
Going into the final day, Garden led Hutch by one stroke and Dodge by two.
Lewis Schenk of Hutch won the individual honors with a 3-under 69 each of the last two rounds for a 54-hole total of 210, 6-under par. He was one of three players to break par. Witchayapat Sinsrang of Dodge was second at 212 and Skyler Tebo from Garden third at 215.
For the season, Tebo topped the individual standings with 29 points, followed by Sinsrang with 23.5 and Schenk with 19.
The top Cougar for the season was Jakkapat Horsangchai in eighth with 10.5 points.
However, Horsangchai was not the top player at Sand Creek Station. In fact, he finished last among the Cougars linksters.
Sophomore Natchapol Srinoon led the way for Barton, going 75-73-75 for a 223 total in a tie for eighth. On the season, Srinoon finished tied for 15th in the standings.
Barton next best outing came from Andrew Iverson, playing as an individual. Iverson shot 75-76-80 for a 231 total in 22nd place.
Blake Huxman and Seokhun Kang were both right behind Iverson with a 234 final tally. Both shot identical rounds of 78-77-79 to tie for 25th.
Jared Oelke was a stroke back in 26th with a 54-hole total of 235. Oelke shot 78-75-82. Horsangchai was 30th with an 81-82-75 – 238.
Barton will tee off the post season Monday with a trip to Gothenburg, Neb. for the District III Championships at Wild Horse Golf Club. The event will consists of 36 holes Monday and 18 on Tuesday.
The top three teams automatically qualify for the NJCAA Championships with up to two more earning at large bids due to the strength of the district.
It will be a tough task for Barton to earn one of those five spots. District III consists of No. 1 Indian Hills (Ia), No. 6 Iowa Western, No. 9 Hutchinson, No. 12 Dodge, and No. 15 Garden as well as Barton, which is No. 20.
“We are definitely going to have to play well,” Coach Kaiser said. “We are going to need some kids to go shot 71 or 72. We can do it. We can qualify for nationals but we are going to have to play well for sure.”
