There is still one game left on the regular season schedule but the Barton men’s soccer team has locked down its spot in the upcoming post season.
Barton secured the second seed from the West with a 2-1 win over Pratt Saturday afternoon at the Barton Soccer Complex. It was the final regular season home game of the season for the Cougars on Sophomore Day.
With the win, Barton improved to 7-3-1 in the west portion of the region standings for 22 points. The Cougars are 11-5-1 overall. Pratt is 1-9-2 and 1-11-3.
The win was a bit of redemption for the Cougars, who tied Pratt earlier in the year at Pratt. That was during a rough stretch for the Cougars that saw them go 0-2-1 over a week stretch.
Since that time, the Cougars have gone 4-1 with the only loss to the top seed from the West, No. 6 Cloud County.
Barton still has to travel to Goodland for the regular season finale Monday against Northwest Tech. That is a game that has been rescheduled twice.
In the win over Pratt, the Beavers actually took the first lead of the game. Carlos Reyna scored midway through the opening half for a 1-0 lead. The Cougars evened the game at 1-all when Angel Lopez scored his first goal of the season with less than eight minutes left in the opening half.
Barton took the lead almost immediately in the second half with the 25 mph wind at its back.
Barton went up 2-1 when Sora Wakabayashi scored a header on a cross from Benjamin Zamora 1:56 into the final 45 minutes.
Barton dominated the possession, getting off 16 shots to just six for the Beavers.
The Cougars will open Region VI play Thursday. The likely opponent for Barton will be either KCK, Cowley or Neosho.
