Barton men drop second straight heartbreaker

Barton men’s basketball games have not been for the faint of heart recently.

The past two games, both at the Barton Gym, have gone down the final seconds.

Unfortunately those games haven’t been favorable to the home-standing Cougars either.

After getting beat in the final seconds Monday, there was a bit of deja vu at the Barton Gym Wednesday.

Garden City took the lead with six seconds to play and a final runner by Cougars’ Jahiem Holden bounced off for the second straight loss.

This time it was Garden wining by a pair, 96-94. But this one wasn’t without some controversy.

Barton was clinging to a 94-93 lead with just 14 seconds left and Garden City inbounding right in front of the Barton bench.

For an instant, it looked as if Barton’s Shawn Warrior had stolen the inbounds pass. But as he slid the floor, Garden City recaptured the ball and got it to Rodney Lewis who took off down the court.

Lewis drove to the free throw line where he collided with a seemingly stationary Holden. As the two collided, Lewis gathered himself, knocked down the shot then fell to the floor.

Holden slid all the way to the baseline when the whistle blew and one of the officials signaled a blocking foul on Holden, much to the dismay of the home fans and Barton Coach Craig Fletchall.

After a timeout with 6.7 seconds to play, Lewis would make the free throw to make it a 96-94 game.

The Cougars had one last chance and it was Holden right in the middle of things again.

The sophomore got the inbounds pass, drove quickly down the right sideline, crossed over the left wing and penetrated to the bucket.

His contested jumper from about 5-feet just off the left block drew contact and sent Holden to the floor once again.

But this time, as his jumper bounced softly on the back iron three times before falling to the ground, there would be no whistle. Just a buzzer to end the game.

A bit of shoving and words followed as the teams spilled onto the floor before each team eventually made their way off at the Kirkman Center. Barton Coach Craig Fletchall was suspended one game by the conference for his postgame conduct. Barton starters Justin Harmon and Desean Munson drew 2-game suspensions for their postgame conduct.

Barton is now pretty out of the West title picture with the back-to-back losses. Its Hutchinson’s to lose at this point as the Blue Dragons are 12-3 and everyone else has at least six losses.

Desean Munson scored 25 and grabbed eight rebounds for Barton. Justin Harmon scored 20 points and handed out 10 assist. Holden ended with 12 and Warrior 10.

The Cougars are 7-7 and in fourth place. Garden is just ahead of them at 7-6.

Barton will now play three games over the next four days. Colby comes to the Barton Gym for a 2 pm tip Friday in a makeup game then it is off to Colby Sunday for a 4 pm start. Barton will earn a forfeit victory over Seward in a scheduled make-up game Monday.
