Barton men headed to Region VI semis after 4-1 win over KCK

It was a pretty calm day for the Barton men's soccer team.

That would be both the weather and the level of urgency in the opening round of the Region VI tournament Wednesday afternoon at the Barton Soccer Complex.

Barton scored seven minutes in, led 2-0 before 15 minutes were gone and were up 3-0 by intermission as the Cougars breezed to an opening round win over Kansas City Kansas.

The Cougars picked up a 4-1 win over KCK and were never challenged. In fact, the only time the Cougars might have felt a little pressure would have been when KCK scored midway through the second half.

That cut the lead to 3-1. But Barton matched that goal less than three minutes later and rode the 3-goal cushion to the semifinals.

In the semifinals, Barton will take on Jayhawk East champion Coffeyville. That battle will take place at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita Saturday. It will be the second of the two semifinals and will start at 6 pm.

Barton will take a 10-2-1 record into the contest. Coffeyville is 9-3-1. The two met back in the first conference game of the season with Barton winning 4-2 in Coffeyville.

But that was nearly two months ago. Coffeyville followed by winning eight straight but closed out the regular season with two losses and a tie.

The Red Ravens, however, righted the ship in first round play Wednesday, rolling to a 5-0 win over Garden City.

In the Cougars win over the Blue Devils, Vladyslav Peretyatko put Barton up 1-0 just 7:35 into the contest. Peretyatko scored on a Felipe D'Agostini pass from the corner, scoring near post for the 1-0 lead.

Exactly seven minutes later it was Ricardo Sepulveda finding the net for the first time in his collegiate career with a header off a Gabriela Privitera corner kick.

Genildo Postimo made it 3-0 with a goal midway through the opening half and Barton was on well on the way to the win.

Privitera scored on as assist from D'Agostini with 22 minutes left in the match after KCK got its first goal with 25 minutes left.

Barton outshot KCK 23-4 and put 17 on goal to just three for the Blue Devils.
