HUTCHINSON — The Barton Community College men’s track and field team took third place at the National Junior College Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Saturday.
The men were led by first-place finishes from sophomores Everett Walker, had a time of 10.21 seconds in the 100-meter dash and Markquis Frazier, who corssed the finish line at 20.38 in the 200 dash.
Barton head coach Dave Schenek said that he was taken aback by how well his team placed considering the injuries the team had to overcome.
“It’s amazing to me, when I go back and look at what happened,” Schenek said. “We had a few people out with injuries who would be top finishers in their events, and we had someone get injured in the prelims (on Friday). If we had a healthy squad, I can’t say we would have won, but it would have been competitive.”
Walker, who will be going to Baylor next year, took second place in the 200 dash at 20.47. just .9 seconds behind his teammate, while Frazier finishedin third place in the 100 dash with a time of 10.33.
Carmetrick Ross took second place for Barton in the long jump witha distance of 24 feet, 10 inches.
Injuries also costed the 4x100 relay team, which was taken out of the running by a false start.
“I was on my seventh leg in teh 4x100 meter relay,” Schenek said. “We thought we were going to turn some heads in that event and then we got false started out of it.
“It changes the whole perception of the team when you have so many people go down like that.”
The Lady Cougars finished in 13th place.
Schenek said that the placement could be deceiving.
“You look at that number and it seems duanting, 13th place,” Schenek said. “But if you look closely, almost all of our points came from freshmen. We’re going to be a real good squad next year.”
Janee Mickens took fourth place in the shot put with a distance of 45 feet, nine and 3/4 inches.
