KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The rhythm, the cohesiveness, has yet to come.
Barton Community College men's basketball team improved to 5-0 on Tuesday evening, beating Kansas City Kansas 64-57 in non-conferenceaction at the KCKCC Fieldhouse.
It wasn't an impressive victory, although it was a win nonetheless as the Cougars withstood a 11-2 Blue Devils run in the second half and held on for the win.
Forcing KCKCC into 22 turnovers while committing 12 themselves, the Cougars were able to keep the Blue Devils out of arm's reach.
Al Key, a sophomore guard, finished with 17 points, the only Barton player in double figures. He also led the Cougars with eight rebounds, four assists and four steals.
"We played zone for most of the second half and we did a good job stretching their zone," Barton head coach Craig Fletchall said of limiting the Devils to only 3-for-15 shooting on 3-pointers. "We hit just enough free throws down the stretch.
The Cougars converted only 17 of 30 free throws, including 7-for-10 from Key.
Andell Cumberbatch and Kevin Kuteyi added nine points apiece for Barton. Fellow guard Trey Unrau added eight, including a pair of 3s.
"We're just not jelling right now," Fletchall said.
