Seems like old hat this season. But it never actually gets old. The Barton softball team swept. Yep, again.
The Cougars 10-1, 10-2 sweep of Williston State was the 10th time in 11 doubleheaders Barton has ended with a sweep. The Cougars are now 32-2 on the year and winners of 13 straight.
Williston State entered the game as the 18th ranked team in NJCAA D-II. The Tetons are now 2-10 on the year and are 0-8 on the current Spring Break trip that has taken them to Seward County, Garden City and Otero (Colo.). The trip will continue through Pratt and on to Iowa over the weekend.
Barton, meanwhile, is done until Monday when the Cougars will host the Kansas Wesleyan JV before diving full force into Jayhawk West play.
In the opener, Barton scored seven times in the opening inning to take control of the contest. Maddison Schofield drove in two in the inning while Brittany Wood, Jenna Hosey and Payton Summers all drove in one.
Hosey added a solo home run in the four to make it a 10-1 game. Hosey finished with three hits and two RBI with three runs scored.
Madison Didion threw three hitless innings, striking out seven to improve to 17-1. Amanda Evans threw the final two innings, allowing two hits and a run.
The Cougars put the nightcap on ice with a 6-run fourth inning to grab a 7-0 lead. A solo homer by Jayden Gonzales in the second gave Barton a 1-0 lead. Schofield had the big blow with a bases-clearing double in the fourth.
Gonzales finished with three hits and three RBI. Schofield and Wood both had two hits.
Holly Posegate threw all six innings, striking out eight and allowing three hits and two runs. She is now 14-1 on the season.
Barton host Kansas Wesleyan JV Monday at 2 pm then starts West play back up Wednesday when Garden City comes to town. Barton will also play Pratt next week as the Cougars have three home doubleheaders.
