The Barton Community College men’s soccer team captured a fierce and physical battle against Garden City on Wednesday, winning 2-1.
The game came down to a free kick awarded to the Broncbusters with only 14 seconds left in the game. The Cougars were up by one and the free kick for Garden City was from 20 feet outside the goal box.
With the crowd cheering, the Broncbusters’ kick sailed over the goal and the Cougars won their sixth Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference game. The Cougars improved their record to 9-3-1, 6-0.
“At the end of the day, they ran out of ideas because our defense was too good for them,” Cougars head coach Oliver Twelvetrees said. “They’re midfield was good and they kept the ball for long periods of the game, but they weren’t able to get through.
“I am proud of the defensive effort.”
The Cougars struck first, when Ricardo Yeverino got the ball in the corner and centered it in front of the net. The pass got by Barton midfielder Dula Fadis and Garden City goalkeeper to Sam McCrillis at the back door for the header.
Late in the first half, the Barton defense broke down. Barton defender Ous Senghore fouled Garden City, giving the Broncbusters a penalty kick. Devidy Cuncha beat Nathan Garrison to score the equalizer.
Both teams played very physical games, but it was Barton’s Ayub Baker that suffered the consequences. Baker challenged a Broncbusters midfielder on a jump ball and came down face first.
After several minutes, Baker came off of the field on his own, bleeding from his ear. The athletic trainers said Baker suffered a concussion.
“It wasn’t prettiest this time,” Twelvetrees said of the win. “But in games like this, rivalry games, sometimes they aren’t pretty. It’s just a case of getting the result.”
The half ended with the teams tied at 1.
Just three minutes into the second half, Sam McCrillis found Kevin Ellis in the box. Ellis beat the goalkeeper, sinking the ball into the left side of the net.
“All I remember is Sam (McCrillis) getting the ball on the outside and he hit it back in and I took the touch over the guy and it went in,” Ellis said of game-winning goal in the second half.
After the second goal, the Cougars shut down the Broncbusters’ offense. Garrison only had to block three of Garden City’s seven shots on goal.
“I think they had only four shots on target all game,” Twelvetrees said, “and when you have numbers like that, you are going to be successful.”
With the time winding down, the game became more physical. Between the two teams there were 39 fouls called, the worst of which occurred when Garden City’s Robert Vickers got a red card for a flagrant foul when he threw Fabio Almeida to the ground after Almeida stole the ball.
BCC volleyball team dominant in 3-0 sweep
The Barton Community College volleyball team dominated Garden City on Wednesday at the BCC Gymnasium, sweeping the best-of-five match, 25-5, 25-12 and 25-18.
It wasn’t until the final game that Garden City began to keep pace with the Lady Cougars. Garden City even took the lead, 11-6, but Barton fought back to overtake the Lady Broncbusters, 12-11.
From there, the Lady Cougars began to amass a lead and eventually beat Garden City on a double-block by Taylor Arnold and Lindsay Garinger.
The Lady Cougars head coach Jaime Cabral was able to clear his bench.
Cabral said that while he was proud of all of his players off the bench, he was especially impressed with Kamri Nehls.
“(Nehls) has been playing a lot more lately. Really impressed with her adjustments of her blocking and hitting,” Cabral said.
Lady Cougars record eighth shutout
A second-half trio of goals highlighted the Barton Community College women’s soccer team’s 4-0 win over Garden City on Wednesday at Cougar Fields — the Lady Cougars eighth shutout this season.
The win lifts the Lady Cougars to a 6-0 record in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference and 9-3 overall. Garden City falls to 6-3-1, 3-3.
For the first 40 minutes of the game, both teams traded scoring opportunities back and forth with the speedy offense of Garden City, led by Irma Reyes and Shee-Ann Sergeant, threatening to score against Lady Cougars goalkeeper Corey LaMoureaux, who had seven saves in the shutout.
But it was Barton that broke the scoreless tie, when Shala Giardini got a pass from Jordan Gallacher and drove a shot that went off of Garden City goalkeeper Fabienne Wilson’s hands, bounced off of the far post and rolled into the goal for a Lady Cougars score.
Giardini scored an unassisted goal to start the second half by beating the defense and driving a shot off of the near post that rolled into the far corner. She was injured when the Garden City back up goalkeeper, Larissa Elad, slid for a tackle.
Lady Cougars head coach Bryan Sailer said without getting Giardini’s leg examined, he wasn’t sure what the injury was or how long she would be out.
Jessica Santacruz scored on a corner kick from Lucero Viveros. Danielle Saucedo scored the final goal for the Lady Cougars, when Wilson’s save rebounded into play and Saucedo buried the ball in the net.
