OVERLAND PARK - It was a game that featured two of the three remaining unbeaten teams in the Jayhawk Conference. Unfortunately for the Barton Community College women’s soccer team it was not one of the two remaining unbeaten teams when it ended.
The Cougars lost at Johnson County in Jayhawk play by a 3-0 score for its first conference loss of the season. Barton is now 2-1 in the conference and 2-3 overall. Two of the Cougars’ losses are to top 5 teams.
Johnson, receiving votes for the top 20, is now 11-1 on the year and 3-0 in the conference.
“Our women are not competing hard enough to give themselves a chance to win games against top conference opponents,” coach Aaron Avila said. “I am afraid the team will have similar results throughout the season until our players compete harder.”
The Cavaliers scored all three goals in the first half. Johnson had a helping wind for the first 45 minutes and made good use of it.
Johnson scored four minutes in, added a second goal midway through the half and made it 3-0 in the final minutes of the half.
The Cougars got off 14 shots but couldn’t find the net.
Barton is back on the road Saturday at Dodge City. The Conquistadors are 1-1 in the conference. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
