Don’t look now but the Barton women’s soccer team is playing its best soccer of the season.
The Cougars made it four straight wins with a 4-0 shutout of Coffeyville Saturday at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
Barton is now 6-4 in the Jayhawk Conference and 7-6 overall. Coffeyville is 4-6 and 7-11.
The win secured Barton the fifth seed in the Region VI tournament starting later this week. Barton will travel to Dodge City Saturday to open the post season.
“We continue to improve and are peaking at the right time,” Barton Coach Aaron Avila said. “We did a good job of controlling the tempo of the game and finishing several opportunities on goal.
“I hope to have a strong performance in our last game and go into the playoffs with confidence.”
It took Barton a while to get the lead Saturday. Jennifer Mendez scored for the 12th time this season with 15 minutes left in the opening half. Nineth Fuentes picked up the assist. The Cougars made it 2-0 five minutes later when Denise Cuenca headed in Maria Munoz’s corner kick.
The second half started with another Munoz to Cuenca combination. Five minutes into the second half Munoz put a thru ball on the foot of Cuenca who flipped the ball past Rebekah Shaffar in goal for a 3-0 lead.
The game stayed 3-0 most of the final half. Barton wrapped up the scoring on a Brooke Russell goal. Russell scored on an assist from Rachel Craft with four minutes left in the contest.
The four straight wins in the longest winning streak of the season for Barton. The Cougars have lost just one to a team not ranked in the Top 25.
