Barton women move into third place

ARKANSAS CITY – Barton Cougar Vivian Onugha flirted with her ninth double-double with 22 points and nine rebounds to spark a wire-to-wire 63-52 Jayhawk Conference road win over Cowley College.

Seven Cougars scored leading scorer Vera Ojenuwa missed for the second straight game. Grace John contributed 14 points, seven rebounds and distributed a game high five assists. Pretty Prairie's McKenna Vogl matched her career high with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds.

Quezia Bertoni added seven points with three assists. Emma Toombs scored four bench points.

Cowley's Hattie Pyle scored 17 points. Ndack Mbengue and Anna Przyszlak finished with double-doubles. Mbengue added 15 points and 14 boards. Przyszlak finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Jaiden Smith added 10 points.

The Cougars broke a 19-19 tie with a 9-0 stretch for a lead they would never relinquish. The Cougars built their largest lead of 17 behind a 12-4 start in the third stanza.

Barton (17-5, 12-4) moves into third place with its fourth consecutive win to drop Cowley to 11-11, 5-11 Jayhawk. Barton plays No. 18 Butler Wednesday. The Grizzlies won the first game 55-41.

The Cougars shot 38% with Cowley at 27%. Barton grabbed 14 offensive boards for a plus eight edge in points in the paint.

NOTES — Barton has gone 5-1 in the past six meetings. Cowley leads the series 16-7 at home and 30-23 overall.
