Special to the Tribune
It was just one game on the schedule. But for the Barton women’s basketball team, it was a big one.
If the Cougars were going to keep the Jayhawk West leaders in sight, a win over Cloud County was much needed. The Thunderbirds were sitting third in the Jayhawk East. Barton had lost to the top two teams in the East.
On the horizon was a trip to Liberal Monday to take on the West leading Seward County Saints, already two games ahead of Barton in the standings.
That trip to Liberal would still be big, but not as big if the Cougars were already three games back. They are not.
Barton took care of business Saturday afternoon, handing Cloud its third loss of the season with a 70-59 win over the T-Birds.
Barton is now 4-3 in the Jayhawk West and 5-3 overall. Cloud falls to 3-3 and 4-3.
The Cougars took an early 9-point lead on a Cloud County team that had not played in 10 days due to quarantine.
But Cloud battled back and were right with Barton into the second half.
The Cougars, however, put some distance between themselves and Cloud in the third period.
Barton extended its lead from 36-30 at half to 58-41 as the Cougars exploded in that third period, outscoring Cloud 22-11.
The Cougars really put the hammer down late in the third.
A Cora Anderson free throw gave Barton a 49-39 lead then a 3-pointer from Tiffany Dortland pushed it to 52-39 with 2:44 to play. Vanessa Oduah hit 1-of-2 free throws then Dortland and Brennan Kirchhoff put together a textbook fast break that resulted in a Dortland layup to make it 55-39.
After a Cloud bucket, Rebecca Leveque capped the quarter with a 3-pointer and the 58-51 lead.
Cloud never put for a real challenge to the Cougars in the final quarter, although the T-Birds did get it to single digits momentarily.
Three Cougars hit double figures with Oduah leading the way. The sophomore scored 16 points, added 10 rebounds and snagged four steals. Dortland finished with 12 and Ulabo 11.
Defensively, the Cougars held the West’s leading scorer Le’Yanna McGinnis to 14 points on just 4-10 shooting.
Now Barton will head to Seward County with a chance to pull within one game in the loss column for the West lead.
The Saints survived a trip to Indy, escaping with a 93-91 win to improve to 5-1 to lead the Jayhawk. Seward is the only team with one loss.
