The Barton Community College women’s track and field team placed 7th at the NJCAA Region VI Championship this past weekend at Ahearn Field House in Manhattan.
The Cougars’ limited numbers totaled 65 during the event. Cowley College won the meet with 33 points followed closely by Butler with 131.
The Cougars captured three gold medals during the weekend – all coming in the field events.
Barton won two throwing events with Janee Mickens winning the shot put and Marcela Solano winning the weight throw. Mickens won the shot with a heave of 45-7.25. Solano won the weight throw at 53-2.75 with Mickens finishing second with a throw of 51-3.75.
The other winner for the Cougars came in jumps with Sametra Kelly winning the triple jump with a gold-medal effort of 38-9.75. She also finished third in the long jump with a leap of 17-8.25.
On the track, the Cougars’ top place came in the 200m where Lashada Sims placed third in 24.92 — heading a list of 3 Cougars that placed in the race. Sims also finished fourth in the 60m with a time of 7.84. Aarian Tipton also placed in both sprints finishing 5th in the 60m and 6th in the 200m.
