Barton Community College’s Charles Neuman (165) punched a berth to the 2024 NJCAA Tournament March 1-2 at Council Bluffs, Iowa in Saturday’s NJCAA South Central District Wrestling Championship.
Neuman made quick short work needing 26-second to produce a fall over Carl Albert's Mason Gordon to lock himself into the semifinals and clinch his national tournament berth. The freshman's hopes of a title bout took a slight turn in the semifinals dropping a 10-0 major decision to top ranked and eventual runner-up Cayleb Atkins of Pratt. Suffering a second straight major decision, Neuman settled for fifth place receiving a medical forfeit victory over Northwest Tech's Micah Castro for a 2-2 day.
The Cougars nearly came away with a second qualifier as Kaden Blake (149) finished seventh falling just a spot outside a qualifying berth. Blake lost to 149-division champion Jaden Tow Lance of Carl Albert State. Blake lost 17-3 before winning a 13-5 major decision to Cloud County's Tarik Adkins.
Three other Cougars reached the 7th place matches but came up short. Avery Wolf (133), Keenon Gonzales-Brown (184) and Dorian Hippen (197). Stephen Baldwin (141), Deryk Yott (157) and Nathan Agudzi-Addo (285) were winless.
Coach Nathan Broeckelman Barton Cougars scored 32 points to finish ninth. No. 14 Labette (159.5) edged No. 3 ranked Pratt (155) for the program's first District Championship.
