Bartons Sander finishes runner-up at Doane Open

CRETE, Neb. — It was another good weekend on the mat for Barton sophomore Kade Sander. Sander wrestled his way to the title match at the Doane Open in Crete, Neb. over the weekend, bringing home a runner-up finish.
He was the only Cougars to place at the meet, but was one of six wrestlers to reach the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Sander rolled through his first three foes on his way to the semifinals. In the semis, Sander took care of Victor Haro of Concordia University by a 13-5 major decision. In the finals, Sander went toe-to-toe against Nebraska’s Zemua Baptista before losing, 8-6, to take second.
Barton had a pair of grapplers make the quarterfinals at 285. Brix Brickey escaped with a narrow win over Justin Hennessy of Nebraska Wesleyan in the opening round, 8-6, then blitzed through his next two foes with ease. Brickey lost to Nebraska’s Patrick Grayson in the quarterfinals. His day ended with a loss to another Nebraska wrestler, Wyatt Wriedt, in the consolation bracket, 2-1.
Ethan Dean also made the quarters at 285, pinning his opponents in the second and third round. Dean was pinned himself in the quarterfinals as well as in the consolation bracket to finish 2-2.
David Kelly made the quarterfinals at 174, winning by a technical fall and a major decision in his first two rounds. Kelly was pinned in the quarterfinals, then lost a 6-1 decision to Heber Shephard in the consolation bracket.
Trent Miles lost in the quarterfinals to Ethan Leighton of Grand View (Iowa) at 184. Miles then won over Alex Kerr of Nebraska Wesleyan in the consolation bracket for falling to Darrin Miller.
Darion Bailey earned his way to the quarterfinals at 133, where he hooked up against Robert Ozuna of York College, losing 8-4. Bailey then lost a close 8-5 decision in the consolation round.
Emmanuel Peralta had a good day as well for Barton at 149. Peralta lost his opening round match, then after receiving a bye to start the consolation bracket, won four straight matches before finally losing in the consolation sixth round.
Barton, ranked No. 14 in the nation, will be off through the Christmas break. The Cougars will return to the mat early in January with a trip to Fort Wayne, Ind. Barton will take place in the NWCA NJCAA National Duals on Jan. 4 and 5.
