The Barton baseball team scored early and often in Hesston Wednesday afternoon.
The Cougars scored in six of the nine innings on the way to a 16-6 win over Hesston College in non-conference action.
Barton scored four times in the first inning to establish a lead it would not relinquish. The Cougars capped it off with five in the ninth for the 10-run win.
Barton improves to 15-3 with the win. Hesston is now 8-17 on the season.
Great Bend freshman Jared Maneth provided the big hit in the opening inning, a 2-run double to left that scored Dawson Pomeroy and Carson Engroff to give Barton a 4-0 lead.
Maneth matched his first inning production with another 2-run double, this time to center, scoring Bryce Baumward and Paul Claassen in third to make it 7-0.
Hesston cut the lead to 11-6 into the ninth inning when Barton put five more runs on the board.
In addition to the 4-RBI day by Maneth, the Engroff had a huge day at the plate. The Topeka freshman was 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Pomeroy also scored three times.
Daniel Kohl picked up the win as he tossed the first two innings in a scheduled pitching rotation for Barton. No pitcher threw more than two innings in the win. Kohl allowed one hit, struck out two and walked two while not allowing a run.
Four of the seven pitchers did not allow a run during their stints. Pomeroy ended the game by striking out the side in the ninth. Brant Millerborg struck out two in his one inning of work as the two combined for five strike outs the final two innings.
Barton is out of Jayhawk West action this weekend as well. Barton will host Iowa Lakes in doubleheaders Sunday and Monday. First pitch both days is set for 1 pm. That is a change from the original schedule of Saturday and Sunday due to weather concerns.
