In a dizzying back-and-forth overtime game that featured 12 lead changes and five technical fouls, Barton Community College had its unbeaten streak end at six games.
Independence outscored the Cougars 11-4 in overtime to post a 92-85 victory Saturday night during the final game of the Barton Booster Basketball Classic at Kirkman Athletic Center.
Barton drops to 6-1 overall, while Indy, which was led by a 29-point, six-assist explosion from guard Anthony Downing, improves to 6-2.
Indy’s Thomas Staton hit a trio of 3-pointers after halftime, including one from the right corner with 2:05 left in regulation.
Barton’s Colin Beatty, who converted 12 of 16 at the free-throw line, made the second of two at the 1:59 mark to knot the score at 79.
After Indy’s Rublee Titus scored inside with 1:11 left, BCC’s Chris Cantino, who finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds, converted two foul shots to tie the game again at 81.
After Titus lost the ball out of bounds on an entry pass into the lane with 13.2 seconds left, the Cougars had a chance to win at the end of regulation, but Carl Wallace’s leaning 3-pointer was off the mark and the game went into overtime.
Titus opened OT with a basket and after BCC turned the ball over, Staton hit a jumper at the 2:52 mark to make it 85-81.
Cantino scored inside with 2:22 left to make it an 85-83 ballgame, but Staton’s 3-pointer from the left corner pushed the margin to 88-83 and put Indy over the top.
Dwayne Brunson finished with a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars, who made only 26 of 45 free throws (57.8 percent).
WOMEN
Barton 63, Labette 47

In Saturday’s Barton Booster Basketball Classic, Barton Community College’s women did to Labette what Grayson County did to the Cougars just 24 hours earlier.
Barton drained 7 of 14 3-pointers in the first half alone, building a 43-23 halftime lead en route to an easy victory at Kirkman Athletic Center.
That same type of scenario unfolded Friday night, when Barton ran across a hot-shooting Grayson County team, which connected on five first-half 3s in bolting to a commanding lead and lopsided win.
Saturday was the Cougars’ turn, and they put together a pair of 11-0 runs during the opening half to put themselves out of arm’s reach of the Lady Cardinals (4-7).
BCC (2-3) snapped a three-game losing streak.
Barton guard Cerissa McMillan knocked down 3 of 5 3-pointers, scoring all of her 11 points in the first half. Shea Shoemaker, Jara Shoemaker, Jade Glunz and Netasha Jackson also had first-half 3s for the Cougars.
Power forward Dionne Harris led the Cougars with 12 points. Jara Shoemaker narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with a game-high 14 rebounds, including 12 on the defensive end, and nine points.
BCC’s Christina Caddy had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, including seven offensive boards.
When Labette made a charge at the Cougars in the second half, BCC went to its inside game, where the 6-foot-4 Jackson was a load in the paint.
BCC’s defense limited Labette to miserable 24.1 percent field-goal shooting (14-for-58), including just 5-for-29 from downtown.
