BCC women split games at weekend classic
spt CougarHead2C

The second half was not kind to the Barton women’s basketball team Saturday night during the final night of the Barton Booster Club/Best Western Classic.
More specifically, the beginning of the third quarter spelled doom for the Cougars. Northern Oklahoma-Enid came went on an 18-2 run to start the third period on the way to a 78-63 win over the Cougars.
The loss was the first of the young season for Barton, now 2-1. The Cougars defeated Redlands the first night of the Classic, 78-64. Enid improved to 3-0.
The Jets held Barton scoreless for nearly five minutes of the third period, scoring 12 straight to build a 43-28 lead. The lead grew to 49-30 4:11 to play in the quarter. During that stretch, Barton missed all eight shots from the field, scoring its only two points on free throws.
That proved too much for the Cougars to overcome as the Cougars dropped their first game of the season.
Shooting was an issue for the Cougars during the loss, hitting just 23-of-63 shot from the floor and on 5-of-17 3’s.
Jaylin Stapleton led the Cougars with 16 points in the loss, followed by Juliana Chagas with 13. Taylor Regan added 11 off the bench.
Fatou Ndao paced the Cougars on the board with a season-high 14 rebounds to go with eight points off the Cougar bench.
All five starters for the Jets reached double figures. Kammi Gruber, Andi Pierce, and Taylor Sylvester each scored 12 to lead Enid. Sylvester also had 16 rebounds.
The first and third quarters also proved vital for Barton in Friday night’s win over Redlands. The Cougars scored 25 points in the opening quarter and 22 in the third to outscore Redlands 47-27 in those two periods.
Micaela Jellison paced the Cougars with 18 points, hitting nearly every things she put up. The sophomore from Protection made all six field goals – including one trey – and five of the six free throws she attempted.
Joining her in double figures was Stapleton with 11 and Irene Chukwudi with 10. Chukwudi added eight rebounds as well.
The Cougars will play the Sterling JV Wednesday in the final non conference game of the season. The 26-game Jayhawk Conference season will get started Saturday when Colby pays a visit to the Barton Gym for a 5:30 p.m tip.
