EL DORADO — Plain and simple, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team caught Butler on a night where the Grizzlies were red-hot from beyond the arc.
Brandon Hilyard pumped in 5 of 6 on 3-pointers and totaled 15 points for Butler, which connected on 10 of 19 3-pointers on the night in short-circuiting the Cougars 82-58 Saturday night at the Power Plant.
Butler was also powered by power forward Andre’ Ingram, who dominated the paint by hitting 10 of 15 shots from the floor and finishing with 25 points and eight rebounds. The Grizzlies ran off 42 second-half points to turn the game into a rout after the Cougars trailed 40-31 at halftime.
In a Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference game that was paramount for both teams to win in keeping pace in the race for second, Barton couldn’t match the intensity of Butler for 40 full minutes.
Barton fell to 18-9 overall and 6-7 in the Jayhawk West. Butler (16-10) moved a half-game ahead of the Cougars in the West standings at 6-6.
The inside-outside combination of Ingram and Hilyard made for a long night for the Cougars, who made only 19 of 59 field goals for 32.2 percent.
Worse yet, a season-long struggle on 3s again haunted BCC on Saturday as it missed 18 of its 21 tries from deep.
Colin Beatty led the Cougars with 12 points, and Carl Wallace and Dwayne Brunson each finished with 11 points.
Butler doubled up Barton, outscoring the Cougars 28-14 in the lane and totaling 37 bench points to BCC’s 22.
The Grizzlies finished 27 for 59 on field goals (45.8 percent), getting high-percentage and open shots throughout the game.
Barton is back in action on Wednesday, when it entertains Hutchinson.
