It was simply a day of taking care of business.

The Barton women’s soccer team had to make sure they didn’t look past their opponent Wednesday to a battle on Saturday against the No. 13 team in the country.

The Cougars were a little slow to start but had no trouble with Garden City, rolling to an 8-1 win behind a hat trick from Dahien Cabrera.

With the win, Barton clinched the second spot in the Jayhawk West standings with an 8-3-1 conference mark for 25 points. Sitting behind Barton is Hutchinson with 21 points.

The Cougars can not catch West leader Cowley. The Tigers will bring a 10-1-1 record and 31 points to the Barton Soccer Complex Saturday in the regular season finale.

Garden City sits at the bottom of the West at 1-10.

But the Broncbusters were the first on the board Wednesday afternoon at Barton.

Miranda Cardona scored on a free kick from 30 yards to give Garden a 1-0 just 19 minutes into the game.

But it didn’t take Barton long to respond.

Annika Gerdau scored a couple minutes later then Kadin Stinson took a long pass and beat a pair of defenders for a 2-1 lead 31 minutes in.

That is when Cabrera took over.

The Florida freshman score the final goal of the first half on a rebound then put the first two goals of the second half on the board for the hat trick.

Cabrera scored seven minutes into the second half off the cross bar and 15 minutes in added her third on a pass from Mercy Azanapo.

Barton would add three more goals before the final buzzer for a route of the Broncbusters.

Now focus turns to Cowley. The 13th ranked Tigers pay a visit to Barton Saturday for a 2 pm kick off to close out the regular season.

The two met in late April in Arkansas City, where Cowley won a 1-0. That was Barton’s first loss of the season and started a 3-game losing skid for the Cougars with losses to 7th ranked KCK and Hutchinson to follow.

Since that time, Barton has won its three games and will take that 3-game winning streak into Saturday.
