MANHATTAN — Kansas State forwards Wally Judge and Jamar Samuels have been a steadying influence while teammates Jacob Pullen and Curtis Kelly have been sidelined by the NCAA for committing minor infractions.
Samuels pumped in a game-high 26 points and Judge scored 22, leading Kansas State to a 100-74 victory over North Florida at Bramlage Coliseum on New Year’s Eve.
Samuels hit 11 of 15 shots from the floor. Judge made 6 of 9 field goals and sank 10 of 13 free throws, as the duo led five Wildcats in double figures and exposed North Florida inside in the process.
“Any time we score inside, it’s always a plus,” Samuels said.
Judge, a 6-foot-9, 250-pound sophomore, entered the game having made only 4 of 20 from the line.
“I’m not blind. I watch TV, and I know my free-throw percentage is terrible,” Judge said. “(On Friday), I felt confident that everything was going in.”
Kansas State (11-3), which led 57-41 at halftime, finished 10-for-17 on 3-pointers and converted 20 of 26 free throws.
The foul shooting was a welcome sight for Kansas State head coach Frank Martin. It entered the game shooting a lethargic 53.4 percent (175 for 328) as a team.
“I’m happy for our guys,” Martin said. “Our guys work at it, and I’m happy that they have been. We’re not as bad (on free throws) as we’ve been shooting.”
In just 11 minutes of first-half action, Samuels gave Kansas State some early energy, hitting seven of his first eight shots from the floor and totaling 17 points by halftime.
“The last couple games, Jamar has gotten those shots but they haven’t fallen,” Martin said. “He made some perimeter shots for us. That’s what he’s learning. When he has an angle, that’s when he has to attack.”
Juevol Myles and Victor Ojeleye came off the bench to add 12 points apiece for the Wildcats. Will Spradling scored 11 points, including making all three of his 3-pointers.
Ojeleye also made all three of his 3s and finished 5-for-6 from the floor. Myles was 4-for-5 on the night, as Kansas State shot 57.4 percent from the floor (35 for 61).
“Twenty-six assists out of 35 baskets,” Martin said. “It means we’re sharing the basketball.”
Parker Smith led North Florida (4-9) with 25 points, hitting 7 of 12.
Pullen returns from his three-game suspension Monday night, when Kansas State entertains Savannah (Ga.) State in Bramlage Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7.
“Everybody in the world sees that we’re missing two of our leading scorers,” Samuels said of Pullen and Kelly. “I’m excited for him to come back. I haven’t seen Zero (Pullen’s uniform number) in a little bit.
“I think he’s going to come back and tear it up.”
Kelly has already served half of his six-game suspension.
