First-place Cougars sweep Saints

LIBERAL – No. 20 ranked Barton Community College launched seven homers with 26 hits to sweep Seward County 14-4 and 18-5 to move into first place in the Jayhawk Conference.

Barton (25-6, 12-2 Jayhawk) has won 13 consecutive games to lead Cloud County (11-3) and Hutchinson (11-3) by one game. Seward (16-17, 4-6 Jayhawk) travels to Barton Saturday for a twin bill.

COUGARS 14, SEWARD 4 (G1) – Barton’s Robby Bolin, Owen Clyne, Wyatt Yetter and Cesar Gomez homered as the Cougars pounded out 13 hits with 13 RBIs.

The Cougars mounted a seven-run second frame in rolling to the five inning 14-4 victory in the opener.

Bolin and Nottlemann each drove home three runs. Gomez and Ayden Hadley each drove home two runs. Clyne and Cole Schieffer each drove home a run. All 10 players recorded a hit on the day and nine starters logged an RBI. 

Reigning conference pitcher of the week Reece Hemmerling (5-1) tossed his second straight complete game yielding seven hits, four runs and striking out five.

COUGARS 18, SEWARD 5  (G2) – Barton’s Jaron Cotton, Schieffer and Yetter homered for seven homers in the twin bill. The Cougars followed with an 8-run first inning in the nightcap for the 18-5 nightcap sweep.

Clyne, Yetter and Schieffer each drove home three runs. Bolin and Cotton drove in two runs. Hadley, Nottlemann, Hank Orr and Gomez each drove home a run.

Yetter's pair of home runs led Barton's seven round tripper day. Clyne and Nottlemann's delivered 4-RBI days. Schieffer launched his second home run of the year while drawing a trio of walks.
