PLANO, Texas – It precedes the rest of the season by nearly one month, but the Barton women’s tennis team served up its season opener this past weekend in Texas.
The Cougars took part in the Collin College Super Bash, losing a pair of matches in battles of Top 20 teams.
The Cougars, ranked No. 16 to start the year, lost to host No. 11 Collin County by a 7-2 count then lost to No. 18 New Mexico Military Institute, 6-3.
Those matches took place Friday in Plano. Two more matches against Top 20 foes were set for Saturday, but those were canceled due to rain.
Neus Torregrosa won both her matches at No. 1 singles. The No. 9 ranked singles player in the NJCAA defeated Jayme Waites of Collin in the first match then defeated Georjemah Roe of New Mexico Military in the second match.
Torregrosa, a sophomore from Spain, won 6-4 and 6-1 over Waites. She defeated Roe after a struggle in the first set, 7-5 and 6-0.
The other win against Collin came at No. 2 doubles where Jenna Groene and Shai Cartmill teamed to beat Makeilah Turner and Nicole Maldanado. The Barton duo won the match easily, 8-2.
Groene gave Maldanado a battle in the first set of their No. 3 singles match before losing, 7-5, 6-0.
Against New Mexico Military, Barton split the singles matches. In addition to the win by Torregrosa, Groene picked up a win at No. 4. The sophomore from Winfield defeated Becsy Pacheco in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
Barton also got a forfeit win at No. 6.
The Cougars lost all three doubles matches.
Barton was to take on No. 14 North Texas and No. 25 Jacksonville (Texas) on Saturday before it was washed out.
The Cougars are not in action again until March. Barton will travel to Salina to take on Kansas Wesleyan on March 1 in its next match. The first home match will be March 3 when Hesston comes to Veteran’s Park.
