Cougar women take 5th at NJCAA Track Championships

LEVELLAND, Texas – A trio of individual titles led the Barton women’s track team to a fifth place finish at the NJCAA Championships this past week.

The Cougars finished with 76 points, just five away from a top three effort.

South Plains won the title with 110.3. Right behind South Plains was New Mexico JC with 108. Then it was a ways back to third and Iowa Central at 81. Iowa Western finished with 78, Barton 76 and Cloud County 72.

The Lady Plainsmen secured the meet on the final event of the day for its 6th national title and the first since 2015.

For Barton, three different women earned national titles and another placed in four events counting her relay.

Lashanna Graham, Kayan Green and Ana da Silva all won titles.

Graham won the 400m hurdles as well as placing third in the open 400m. Graham’s winning time in the hurdles was 58.61. She ran a 54.11 in the 400m.

Da Silva won the shot with a put of 53-2.25. Jada Sewell took seventh. Sewell also placed sixth in the discus and eighth in the hammer throw.

Kayan Green brought home gold in the 800m, circling the track twice in 2:10.55.

Nia Robinson did not win an event but scored in three individual events as well as a member of the 4x100m relay team.

Robinson placed in all three jumps for the Cougars, taking second in two of them.

She finished second in the high jump at 5-8. Teammate Annia Ashley was sixth at 5-4.25.

Robinson took second in the long jump with a leap of 20-1 and fourth in the triple jump with an effort of 40-4.75.

Robinson also teamed with Ayesha Nelson, Jayda Dillon and Shemia Odaine to take seventh in the 4x100m in 46.55.

Nelson finished fifth in the 100m hurdles in 13.91 with Ashanti Harvey eighth in 14.42.
