It took a little while to get going. But in the end it was just the kind of result the Barton men’s soccer team was expected to post.
Barton rolled by Northwest Tech to close out the regular season with an 8-0 win. The Cougars put the finishing touches on a 12-2 regular season at the Barton Sports Complex.
Barton led just 2-0 at the half but exploded for six second half goals to wrap up the regular season. The Cougars finished 10-2 in the region and 6-2 in the Jayhawk West to finish runner-up to Cloud County in both. NW Tech finishes its season at 5-10-2 and out of the playoffs.
The Cougars now turn focus to Kansas City Kansas the opening round of the Region VI playoffs Thursday afternoon at home.
Barton scored a pair of goals within 20 seconds of each other 30 minutes into the match to grab a 2-0 lead at half.
In the second 45 minutes, Barton was methodical in scoring six goals as the game turned into a blowout.
Lucas Alves scored twice in the win including a penalty kick that gave the Cougars a 4-0 lead.
Mario Ramirez also added a pair of goals for the Cougars. The second goal came on the third assist of the game from sophomore captain Vinicius Monteiro that gave the Cougars a 6-0 lead with 25 minutes left in the contest.
Alexander Kay had a goal and an assist while Benjamin Zamora and Teppei Negami each scored their first collegiate goal in the win as the Cougars played several players during the win.
In the net, Bruce Turner and JJ Parente each played a half in the shutout win but did not face a single shot on goal the entire contest.
The shutout was the eighth on the season for the Cougars.
Barton will host KCK Thursday at 4 pm. If Barton wins that contest, the Cougars will either travel to Johnson County or host Garden City in second round action.
That will actually be the final round of the region as two teams from Region VI advance to the Plains District Championship.
