GARDEN CITY — In a wild and woolly Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division clash, Barton and Garden City squared off Saturday night in what turned out to be a double-deep-dish overtime thriller.
Indeed, it was a back-and-forth, rip-your-heart-out, double OT classic, although it didn’t fall the 13th-ranked Cougars way. Garden City survived for an 85-82 victory in a battle of countless lead changes and momentum shifts.
“Hats off to Garden for pretty much playing hard for 50 minutes,” Barton head coach Craig Fletchall said. “I thought our guys laid it on the line, but you go on the road and shoot 30 percent and have 17 turnovers, we were fortunate to being within striking distance at the half (down 31-20).”
Led by Barton freshman guard Turon Parker, who scored 18 of his team-high 20 points after halftime, the Cougars (21-4, 7-4) trailed Garden 41-25 before cutting loose for a galvanizing 16-0 run. They tied the game at the 11:22 mark on Parker’s 3-pointer before Jarwand Rheubottom broke the Broncbusters’ scoreless skid with a basket at the 11-minute mark.
Chauncey Williams, who exploded for 32 points, hitting 8 of 19 3-pointers, answered with a 3 for a 46-43 lead, sending both teams on runs the remainder of regulation and into both overtime periods Parker, a product of Canton, Ohio, also hit a clutch jump shot near the free-throw line with :01 seconds left in the first overtime period, knotting the score at 77 and forcing a second overtime.
“I was real pleased with our guys after halftime,” Fletchall said. “We had a 10-point lead and single-handedly ... I can’t even comment about the officiating, but single-handedly, Garden got back in the game and hit some free throws down the stretch. There were two good teams out there with some quality, big-time players. The bottom line is that our guys competed and this is what this league is all about.
“We’ve just got to learn that we have to play for 40 minutes, and we’re not going to be given anything on the road.”
Sophomore swingman Carl Wallace added 18 points and five rebounds, and Algie Key finished with 17 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
Silas Mills had 13 points, Geron Johnson and Carl Porter scored 12 apiece and Rheubottom added 10 for the Busters (18-5, 6-5).
