Cougars pick up several first round wins in NJCAA Championships

The Barton women’s tennis scored some early wins at the NJCAA Championships in Tyler, Texas on Sunday.
Monday, though, they could not duplicate those triumphs in the championships bracket.
The Cougars picked up three singles wins and a pair of doubles wins to open play at the championships.
All five of those lost in the Round of 16 Monday.
Most of the players that lost in the first round advanced to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.
The most exciting first round win came via the No. 3 doubles team of Baylee Reade and McKenna Hammeke. The two lost their first set to Miranda Jackson and Molly Stumpf of Lewis & Clark by a 6-3 score then won 6-4 to even the match. In the tiebreaker the two trailed 6-1 then won seven straight points to earn an 8-6 tiebreaker win and advance to the Round of 16.
There the duo ran up against the draw’s fourth seeded Madison Hoelting and Tadiwanashe Mrewa of Seward County, losing by a 6-1, 6-1 score to end their season.
Daniela Sanz and Idah Longwe received a first round by at No. 1 doubles then faced Lorraine Banimataku and Thea Minor of New Mexico Military in the Round of 16. The duos time in the championships bracket ended with a 6-2, 7-5 setback.
Due to getting a bye in the first round, Sanz and Longwe moved into the consolation bracket where they stayed alive Monday with an 8-2 win over Nikita Hill and Amelie Saint-Dizier of Eastern Arizona to advance to the consolation quarterfinals.
Sanz won her singles match at No. 1 singles, defeating Paige Gibson of Meridian in easy fashion, 6-0, 6-0. But Sanz matched up against the second seed in the draw in Macarena Oliveras of ASA. Oliveras made short work of Sanz, winning in the Round of 16, 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals and end Sanz’s season.
Longwe also won her first round match at No. 3 singles, with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Agustina Grimolizzi of North Central Technical College. In the Round of 16, Longwe lost to the third seed in the draw, Kakoro Chishaki of South Plains College, 6-4, 6-2 to end her season.
Also winner her first round singles match was Karli Beck at No. 4 singles. Beck defeated Mary Neeley Meyers of Hinds College, 7-6(5), 6-4 to advance to the Round of 16. There, Beck’s season ended with a loss to Mariya Yatsenko of South Plalins, 6-1, 6-0. Yatsenko is the sixth seed in the draw.
Julianna Seabra, Reade, and Hammeke all lost their first round matches. Seabra and Reade both received byes in the consolation quarterfinals while Hammeke lost in the consolation second round to Taylor Miller of Meridan, 8-0.
At No. 2 doubles, Beck and Seabra lost their first round match and picked up a bye into consolation quarterfinals.
The Cougars still have a pair of singles players and two doubles teams left in the consolation draw.
Seabra will take on Nakita Hill of Eastern Arizona at No. 2 singles while Reade plays Miranda Jackson of Lewis & Clark at No. 5 singles.
Sanz and Longwe play Alexandria Gilbert and Taryn Swanepoel of Collin County at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 doubles team of Seabra and Beck will take on Julie Sibbesen and Jamie Tubao of Harford.
