Cougars run comes up just short in mini pool sudden death
barton_community_college_soccer.jpg

WICHITA - It was a scenario the NJCAA Soccer Championships hadn’t seen much. All three teams in the pool finished 1-1. All three games were 2-1 scores. Through three tie-breakers, there was no winner.

So a mini pool was set up between the three. The highest seed in the pool, Salt Lake got a bye while Barton and Indian Hills played with the winner taking on Salt Lake.

The format? Golden Goal. Two 10-minute periods. If still no goal, then to sudden death penalty kicks.

In the first match, Barton and Indian Hills were scoreless through the pair of 10-minute periods. That sent the match to PKs.

Barton survived that, winning 4-3 and setting up another contest against Salt Lake with a spot in the semifinals on the line.

This time the Cougars were not as fortunate.

Barton’s season came to an end just three minutes into the match when Salt Lake scored a goal to put an end to the Cougars run at the NJCAA Championships.

Salt Lake heads to the semifinals where they will take on Monroe College. The other semifinal will pit top seed Arizona Western against traditional power Tyler.

Barton ends its season with an 18-4-4 record.
