Cougars sweep NW Tech

The Barton Community College softball team swept Northwest Kansas Technical College 10-2 and 18-0 with a 23-hit attack Saturday at Cougar Field.

Barton (12-10, 9-3 Jayhawk) drop the Mavericks to 1-22, 1-11Jayhawk. The Cougars play Pratt Wednesday and travel Saturday to Hutchinson.

The Cougars scored runs in the first inning and five runs in the fifth inning in the opener.

Lani Dryden sparked the Cougars from the bottom of the lineup going 4-of-5 with a pair of extra base hits, driving in four runs including her first collegiate triple capping Barton's seven run, second inning breaking open game two.

Leslie Ramos provided the lone home run driving her second long ball of the season out of the park for the Cougars' first two runs of the day.

Allyson McDougal collected hers in game two as the reigning KJCCC and National Player of the Week went 2-for-4 on the day with three stolen bases.

Having her program second best 21-game hit streak snapped in game one, Mikaila Herring bounced with a 2-of-3 performance lacing a double and her first collegiate triple to finish the day with a team tying four runs.

The Barton pitching staff and defense limited the Mavericks to nine hits on the afternoon with victories in the circle earned by Aly Lawrence and Elina Bartlett as both freshmen improved to 3-1 on the year.

Lawrence received the opening nod, working three innings of two hits and two strikeouts with Bartlett spinning game two's five innings in scattering just three hits, walking one, and striking out two. Alicia Goseland closed out the opener's final two frames allowing four hits, walking none, and getting a strikeout.
