Expectations still high for Barton Community College’s men’s soccer team
Nothing has changed for Barton Community College men’s soccer team.
Cougars head coach Oliver Twelvetrees still expects the best out of his players.
BCC finished last season by advancing NJCAA national tournament after winning a district title and their second Region VI title in three years. They also finished the year ranked sixth in the nation.
“We always have very high expectations,” Twelvetrees said. “We always go into the season expecting to be Jayhawk Conference and regional champions. We always go on the field with the attitude that we are the best.”
The preseason coaches’ poll has Barton finishing  the season in first place of the Kansas JayhawkCommunity College Conference. Also, the team is starting their season ranked 10th nationally, Twelvetrees said.
The Cougars’ season starts Saturday at 8 p.m. against Iowa Western. Barton will play North Iowa Area Community College on Sunday at 3. Both games will be played at Memorial Stadium.
Even though the expectations are the same, the team is not.
“We returned four starters from last year,” Twelvetrees said. “We have quite a few new players meaning we won’t have the same flavor of previous years.”
Of the returning starters, there are one forward, one midfielder and two defenders, Twelvetrees said.
“The team has enough determination to win, even though we probably won’t score as many goals this year,” Twelvetrees said. “We are not going to be as creative on offensive, but we will have better defense. We will be hard to beat.”
Kevin Ellis is a returning All-American forward. Ellis led the conference with 23 goals last season. Twelvetrees said Ellis might be playing a different role this season.
Twelvetrees said he wants to have Ellis play defense this season, but still be a scoring threat.
“I expect him to lead the team,” Twelvetrees said. “He is very powerful, good in the air. He will be a big threat on corner kicks.”
Twelvetrees expects sophomore Ricardo Yeverino to fill in as a goal producer for the Cougars this season.
“Ricardo is an explosive forward,” Twelvetrees said. “I expect big things from him this season.”
Leading the Cougars as captain will be sophomore Aaron Appel.
“He has the leadership skills and he’s a role model for the team,” Twelvetrees said. “We call him Captain America because of his leadership skills, loyalty to Barton and his hard work. On the field, he’s a very good reader at midfield.”
A lack of experience for the Cougars comes from their goalkeepers. Barton has two players competing for the position, but sophomore Nathan Garrison will get more time in goal for the Cougars this weekend.
“We are inexperienced at keeper,” Twelvetrees said. “We are just waiting to see who can strap up and show they can play in big games.”
