NEWTON – It was another up and down day for Landon Fox.
The Barton Community College sophomore got off to a slow start but after back-to-back birdies near the end of his first nine Fox was appearing to gain some momentum. But a double bogey ended that and Fox went on to shoot an 80 on the second day of the men’s NJCAA National Golf Meet at Sand Creek Station.
Fox shot a pair of 40’s during a wet afternoon and sits in a tie for 69th at the halfway point of the meet.
Fox opened with a 79 and followed with the 80 for a 2-day total of 159, 15-over par. He is just five strokes from putting himself in the top 50.
Fox started on the back nine and bogeyed four of the first five holes as the rain and wind hampered conditions in his afternoon tee time.
But he settled in with a par on No. 15 then birdied the only Par 5 less than 600 yards by carding a four on the 525-yard 16th hole. Fox chipped in for a two on the par 3 17th to put himself at 2-over.
But that momentum left with an out-of-bounds drive on 18 which resulted in a double bogey.
Fox settled down to par five of the next seven holes but a double bogey on his next to last hole of the day pushed his total to 8-over.
Michael DeMorat of Eastern Florida State took the lead in the event with his 5-under par 67 on day two. Paired with his even par round to start play he holds a 2-stroke lead on the field at 5-under 139.
Indian Hills (Iowa) moved into sole possession of the top spot with a 292 second day and a 2-day total of 581 – good for a three stroke lead on Eastern Florida State. Jayhawk Conference schools Dodge City is sixth and Hutchinson eighth at the midway point.
