EMPORIA — The Barton women’s cross country team ran Friday night at the Papa John’s Invitational in Emporia.
Sophomore standout Mirena Goncalves had a great meet to lead the Cougars at the invitational, won by Newman University.
Newman dominated the meet, placing four runners on the top 10 on the way to a team score of 31 points. That was well ahead of runner-up Butler with 78. Other Jayhawk schools to run were Dodge City with 178 points, Highland with 202, and Garden City with 220.
Barton did not field a full team at the event. The Cougars ran four runners during the meet, one short of the number needed to earn a team score.
Goncalves, a sophomore from Venezuela, ran a 19:35.40 over the 5K course for third place. Sandra Szpott of Garden City won with an 18:27.90 while Sierra Mortensen of Washburn was second with a 19:07.40.
While Goncalves is the only returning sophomore, freshman Cadeebra Calcote led the three freshman from Florida by running a 21:40.70 for 33rd place.
Barton’s other two runners were Olivian Jackson in 129th with a time of 27:54.6 and Tia Steward in 144th with a time of 32:47.6.
Part of Newman’s winning team was Great Bend High graduate and freshman for the Jets, Karen Razo. Razo finished seventh overall with a time of 20:11.3.
