After inclement weather postponed the April 1-2 event, the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference meet got under way on Thursday afternoon at StoneRidge Golf Club.
The four-team field — Barton Community College, Dodge City, Coffeyville and Colby — played nine holes. The meet will finish up today with 18 holes, starting at 10 a.m.
Barton led after the first round with a combined score of 184. Dodge City finished at 191 and Colby shot 200.
“We had one good score, a 41, and the rest of the them were on the team play with 46, 48 and 49,” Barton head coach Doug Kaiser said. “Our No. 5 girl shot a 50, but she’s been shooting a 45. It’s because of the weather. It’s a little chilly still. We’ll come around tomorrow.
“We’re leading Dodge by seven and Colby by 16, but we do play 18 (holes), so that could change.”
Each school designates a five-player team, and the top four scores are totaled for each team. Coffeyville only had two players competing, so it did not have a team score.
“I thought we were going to be worse off because I watched some of those last holes,” Kaiser said, “but we’re doing OK.”
Maddie Sherman of Barton led the field with a 5-over 41.
Barton’s Kara Koepplin shot a 46.
“Maddie did well today,” Kaiser said. “She shot a 41. Kara, our No. 1 golfer, shot 46. She kept up with the No. 1 player from Dodge (Annie Sheridan), which is good. She’s from Australia. She’s won every tournament so far.”
Katie Seeman, a Larned High School product, scored a 48, and Blakelee Cooper, a freshman from Hoisington, finished at 49.
“Katie shot pretty good,” Kaiser said. “She struggled on a few holes, but she came around on those last couple holes.
“Blakelee was doing well, but she ended up giving up five strokes those last few holes.”
There are six tournaments in conference play. The Lady Cougars won the first three in the fall.
“We should (win the conference if we win here),” Kaiser said. “We’ve played three so far, and went first in all three. Worst we can do is go 0-for-3 this spring to tie, but I hope we don’t do that.”
