In the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference opener, the Barton Community College softball team swept Colby on Wednesday at Cougar Field.
Barton jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first inning of Game 1, then tacked on three more runs in the third to go on to win 8-3. In Game 2, the Lady Cougars rallied from a 6-1 second-inning deficit by scoring six runs in the fourth and fifth innings to win 8-7.
With the doubleheader sweep, Barton improves to 5-19 on the season, 2-0 in the Jayhawk Conference play at 2-0, while Colby falls to 4-17 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
Barton will have a break in its schedule until traveling to Liberal on Saturday, March 24 to take on Seward County in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
Cougars cruise
to non-conference win
The Barton Community College baseball team took a break from conference action and defeated the Bethany College junior varsity 16-7 Wednesday evening at Lawson-Biggs Field.
The Cougars, who had defeated Bethany previously 21-11 on Feb. 22, scored in bunches to capture the win.
After trailing 1-0 after the first inning, Barton scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth behind triples by Clayton Garland and Ryan Tracy, followed by a three-run home run by Tanner Carpenter.
After Bethany scored one in the fifth inning and five in the sixth, the Cougars struck back with five more runs in the home half of the sixth.
They later added four in the eighth inning in cruising to the victory.
Barton improves to 16-6 on the season and will next play Seward County in Liberal on Saturday and Sunday. The two teams will play doubleheaders on both days, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
