It wasn’t a pretty Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division tilt.
Between the Barton Community College women’s basketball team and Butler, there were 40 turnovers, but the Lady Cougars found their stride in the final eight minutes to beat the Lady Grizzlies 60-53 on Wednesday night at Kirkman Activity Center.
“Well, that’s a game like our team has to play,” Barton head coach Darin Spence said. “Just play ugly and find a way. Sometimes things don’t start well. They don’t go well, but you have to find a way. That’s kind of been our message the whole year, and we did that.
“Our team did a good job. We got down a couple times, but we hung in there and just found a way.”
Down 41-36 with 8:15 remaining, Dionne Harris started a 18-2 run that lasted more than five minutes and ended with the Lady Cougars up 54-43.
Harris got a bucket in the paint, followed by Raven Anderson’s jumper and layup.
Anderson scored 10 points in the run and finished with 13.
Blair Bloomfield, who led both teams with 16 points in the game, drilled in five points including a 3-pointer from the top of the arc.
“We’ve been doing things for her offensively,” Spence said of Bloomfield. “We’ve actually been trying to get her more shots, and she’s done a really good job. She’s learned a lot this year.”
Netanya Jackson, who finished with a double-double scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, put in 1 of 2 free throws during the run.
“I thought Netanya was good tonight,” Spence said. “Dionne wasn’t at her best, but I think Netanya did a really good job helping inside tonight.
“You know, Netanya has some game to her. It’s always just been a question of conditioning and inner drive. She’s been coming around.”
Barton, which shot 60 percent from the field in the second half, made 4 of 6 free throws down the stretch to remain in the lead.
Erin Copeland finished the game with 11 assists.
Bloomfield scored the first two points of the game on a putback, but Butler was able to take a small lead early on a few Lady Cougars turnovers.
Barton, which finished the first half with 12 turnovers, was able to tie the game three times before taking a one-point lead with 6:29 remaining. The first half saw four ties and three lead changes before Barton went on a 6-0 run to take a 27-24 lead into halftime.
With 1:17 remaining in the opening half, Bloomfield made a pair of free throws, and Jackson scored the final four points with a bucket and two free throws.
Butler, which falls to 14-11 overall, 3-8 in the West, went on an 11-2 run to take the lead at the beginning of the second half before Barton went on its 18-point run.
Jamilla Bonner, who has been averaging 19 points per game against Jayhawk West opponents, led the Lady Grizzlies with 14.
The Lady Cougars, who improve to 16-10 overall, 6-6 in the conference, travels to No. 2-ranked Hutchinson on Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. game.
