Getting by Butler, Johnson County and Hutchinson were tough for any Jayhawk Conference women’s soccer team this season. So it was no surprise those three teams dominated the first team all-conference selections.
All but one of the first team slots went to someone from those three teams. But the Barton women’s soccer team had plenty of representation on the all-conference team. Barton placed three players on the second team and four more were tabbed honorable mention.
Jennifer Mendez, Maria Munoz, and Maria Rodriguez were all second team picks for Barton, which finished the season at 9-7.
Mendez had a huge season for the Cougars. The freshman standout from Utah scored 15 goals for Barton, finishing with 33 points. She was selected as a forward.
Munoz, a sophomore from Topeka, was named second team at midfield. She had two goals and four assists for the Cougars. It was the second straight year Munoz was a second team selection. Munoz was the lone Cougars to earn All-Region honors as a second team pick on the 22-member team.
Rodriquez was a second team pick as defender. She moved to defender this season after being a first team selection as midfielder. The sophomore from Garden City had a pair of goals and a pair of assists.
Four more Cougars were selected as honorable mention.
Barton’s second leading scorer, Denise Cuenca was picked honorable mention at forward. The freshman from Utah had six goals and tied for the lead on the team with six assists for 18 points.
In the midfield, Natalie Espino and Dominique Milsap were recognized. Espino, a freshman from Colorado, tied Cuenca for the team lead with six assist and added two goals for 10 points. Milsap, a freshman from Rose Hill scored twice.
Hannah Knaak, another freshman from Rose Hill, was picked honorable mention defender. Knaak had one assist in addition to her solid play on defense.
