Sander, Brickey win titles at Oklahoma City Open

OKLAHOMA CITY – A pair of champions is a pretty good way to start off the 2017-18 wrestling campaign for the Barton Cougars.
Barton traveled south to the Oklahoma City Open and came home with two champions to go along with a runner-up finish, one third place effort and one fourth place spot.
Sophomores Kade Sander and Brix Brickey wrestled their way to a title at the event. Sander won the 157-pound division while Brickey won at 285.
Sander won all four of matches on the mat by fall or technical fall. The Great Bend sophomore received a bye in the opening round the won by technical fall in the second round and fall in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Sander pinned Tracy Reeder, wrestling unattached, in 1:25 to move into the finals.
In the championship match at 157, Sander won by technical fall over Fort Hays State’s Anthony Scantlin in a dominating 18-1 fashion.
Brickey had to win five matches to take the title at 285, three of which he won by fall. Brickey has no trouble in the first two rounds, wrestling a combined 39 seconds to get two pins and move into the quarterfinals.
Brickey, a sophomore from Lindsborg, had to work to make it to the semifinals, getting past unattached wrestler Cornelius Putnam by an 8-6 count. In the semifinals, it was pin number three for Brickey, winning in 1:18 over Northeast Oklahoma’s Brian Andrews.
Brickey won the championship match 2-0 over Newman’s Thor Balavage.
Making the final but coming up just second was Kelton Suchy of Russell. Suchy won two matches by technical fall in the 165-pound division, including a semifinal match over Colin Brennan of NEO. Wyatt Jordan, also from NEO, beat Suchy in the title match by a technical fall.
Gage McBride took third in that same 165 division, also losing to Jordan. Jordan beat McBride in the quarterfinals – the only loss of the day for the freshman. McBride was not challenged through the consolation bracket, winning every match by technical fall or major decision on his way to third place.
The fourth place finish came at 174 by sophomore David Kelly. Kelly lost in the semifinals. He then went 1-1 in the consolation bracket for the fourth place finish.
Barton will be back on the mat this weekend with a short trip to Lindsborg for the Bethany Swede Open. That meet will take place Saturday.
