OK, Storm Sanders simply could not curb his enthusiasm.
On a frustrating Friday night for Barton Community College, the opening night of the Barton Booster Club Basketball Classic at Kirkman Athletic Complex, the Cougars needed a closer.
Sanders, a silky-smooth, freshman southpaw, emphatically slammed the door shut on stubborn Quakerdale Prep — even though he drew a technical foul in the game’s final minute for jawing at Eagles standout Chris Oliveria after hitting a floating, one-handed tear-drop in the paint to give the Cougars a 59-45 cushion en route to a 59-48 win.
Prior to that, Sanders hit a critical 3-pointer at the 3:26 mark and BCC forward Chris Cantino nailed a wing jumper with 2:41 left, providing bail-out baskets and a 57-45 lead in a game where Barton wasn’t hitting on all cylinders.
The Cougars improved to 6-0 despite shooting a chilly 31.8 percent from the floor (21-for-66), despite hitting only six of 18 3-pointers and despite missing 14 of 25 free throws.
The difference? Barton’s defense was pivotal as it lugged a 28-21 lead into halftime, buoyed by freshman forward Dwayne Brunson, who  scored 10 of his team-high 14 points during that stretch. He also nine boards, including five off the offensive glass, and finished 7-for-11 from the field.
Barton’s defensive pressure forced Quakerdale Prep into 24 turnovers, turning nine of those into baskets on the other end. Moreover, BCC outrebounded the Eagles 45-39, with Cantino recording a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, although he missed 14 of 17 shots and was only 4-for-10 on free throws.
Beatty, who had 11 points and seven rebounds, nailed back-to-back 3-pointers and then Sanders added another 3 during the opening five minutes of the second half to cap a 13-4 run for a 41-25 lead.
But Quakerdale wouldn’t go away, chiseling the lead down to 52-45 with 4:29 remaining after Jamell Johnson’s 3-pointer.
Oliveria led Quakerdale (1-9) with 16 points and nine rebounds.

WOMEN
 Grayson County (Texas) 79,
Barton 53

Grayson County rode a first-half 3-point barrage in building a 15-point halftime lead and cruising past Barton on Friday night.
Grayson post player Camille Redmon scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the first half. Guard Ijeoma Uchendu added 16 points, 11 in the first half.
Post player Dionne Harris had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Cougars (1-3), who dropped their third straight.
Grayson outscored BCC 21-8 over the final 9:28 of the first half to seize its 38-23 halftime lead.
The Vikings shot 48.5 percent from the floor in the first half (16-for-33), including 5-for-12 from downtown. Uchendu nailed 3 of 6 3-pointers in the opening 20.
Grayson finished at 40.8 from the floor, hitting 29 of 71 shots, including 9-for-23 on 3s (39.1 percent).
BCC shot just 27.9 percent from the floor, and missed 15 of 16 3s.
After BCC led 4-2,  Lacy Ryah’s 3-pointer started an 11-0 Grayson run that also included a pair of treys from Uchendu. It gave the Vikings a 13-4 lead with 14:25 remaining in the first half.
The Cougars tied the game at 13 at the 11:08 mark after scoring eight unanswered points, capped by Christina Caddy’s layup off a feed from Raven Adams on the break.
But Grayson took back the momentum and never looked back after halftime.
