First, there was the calm.
Then there was the storm.
The Barton Community College men’s basketball team sputtered early in Tuesday night’s game with Hesston College, although the Cougars led 48-35 at halftime.
Then came the second half, in which the Cougars blew the Larks out of the gym during a 99-69 manhandling at Kirkman Athletic Center.
Barton point guard Storm Sanders, a freshman from Canton, Ohio. He took Hesston by storm in the early going, scored 11 of the Cougars first 14 points — stretching from the opening tip until the 14:24 mark in the opening half.
Sanders finished with team highs of 23 points and six assists, as Barton (10-2) coasted an easy win.
Hesston (6-5) is nowhere close to the competition level the Cougars will ultimately meet, when Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference action gets under way in January.
But it doesn’t matter to Sanders whom the Cougars are playing. He wears the same game face every time out.
“A lot of it has to do with being focused in the classroom and practice,” Sanders said. “I have a certain routine I go through, and it all starts with practice and being ready every time out.”
Barton Community College head coach Craig Fletchall refers to Sanders as the team’s emotional leader.
“He has really come a long ways this semester,” Fletchall said. “The thing is that we anticipated Hesston playing a zone, and it was important that we established the perimeter jump shots and Storm and DeVonte (Grant) gave us a big lift early.”
While Grant scored 12 of his 13 points in the first half, knocking down 3 of 6 trifectas, it was Carl Wallace who was dominant, just like Sanders.
Wallace, a 6-foot-4 freshman guard from Philadelphia, Pa., poured in 21 points, hitting 9 of 17 field goals, and he also added eight rebounds.
“He should feel confident heading into the break for the way he played tonight,” Fletchall said of Wallace. “He played both ends aggressively and he has been down on his himself.
“He played very, very good.”
Smooth sophomore swingman Colin Beatty added 11 points, and Dwyane Brunson, a 6-7 freshman post player from Queens, N.Y., fresh off a 19-rebound performance in a BCC win over Creative Solutions on Monday night, had another double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Devon Lloyd led Hesston (6-5) with 29 points, hitting 10 of 18 field gials, including 3-for-6 from downtown.
BCC is back in action on Monday against the Southwestern junior varsity, out of Winfield.
