GARDEN CITY — Some nights the rim seems about the size of a peach can instead of a peach basket.
That was the case for the Barton women’s basketball team Wednesday night in the first road game of the season. The Cougars traveled to Garden City and left a 71-51 loser to their Jayhawk Conference foe at the Perryman Center.
Barton is now 1-1 in the Jayhawk and 4-2 overall. Garden City is 1-1 and 3-2.
Barton scored just seven points in the opening quarter after hitting only 2-of-15 shots from the field. Barton trailed 13-7 after one period, but a 7-0 run by Garden City to start the second quarter made it 20-7 and the Cougars were never really in the game after that.
Barton made just 17-of-62 for the game for a paltry 27 percent. The Cougars connected on 3-of-10 3-pointers and just 14-of-25 free throws as they struggled to make shots from every distance.
The highest scoring quarter of the night for Barton was a 17-point outing in the third quarter.
Jaylin Stapleton led Barton with 17 points and was one of few Barton players to hit better than 50 percent, including a 7-of-9 effort at the free throw line.
Micaela Jellison grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Cougars but struggled to a 3-of-16 shooting night.
Jessica Carrillo led five Garden City players in double figures with 16.
Barton will be at home Saturday against Butler in a 5:30 tip. Butler is 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Jayhawk after a 72-58 loss at Seward County Wednesday. The Grizzlies beat Garden 77-53 in El Dorado to start the conference season.
